Al-Hannanah Mosque is a Shi'ite mosque in Najaf, Iraq, located on Al-Abrar Street in the Hay Al-Hussain district. It is also known as the Mosque of the Head (Masjid ar-Ra's). It is among the sites in Najaf visited by pilgrims and by those who reside in the city. Arabic sources count it as one of three places where Ja'far al-Sadiq is said to have prayed. Citing Ibn Tawus's Misbah al-Zair, the site was formerly known as "al-ʿAlam". The record classifies its style under Islamic architecture in general.

According to tradition, the head of Husayn ibn Ali was set down at this spot while being taken to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. The account rests on a narration attributed to Ja'far al-Sadiq and is the reason given for the name Mosque of the Head. The place appears under the older name "al-ʿAlam" in Ibn Tawus's Misbah al-Zair.

Aus Wikipedia

The Al-Hannanah Mosque (Arabic: مَسْجِد ٱلْحَنَّانَة, romanized: Masjid al-Ḥannānah), also known as the Mosque of the Head (Arabic: مَسْجِد ٱلرَّأْس, romanized: Masjid ar-Raʾs), is a Shi'ite mosque, located in Najaf, in the Najaf Governorate of Iraq. The term "Mosque of the Head" is because the head of Husayn ibn Ali was kept in its middle, while being taken to his opponent Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, according to a hadith (narration) attributed to his descendant, Ja'far al-Sadiq.
