It takes its name from the neighbouring city gate and is also known as the Bab Guissa Mosque, with the alternative Arabic form Bab Ghaysa appearing in some sources. An adjoining madrasa forms part of the complex. The mosque lies within the medina of Fes el-Bali in the Fès-Meknès region, an area inscribed as part of a World Heritage Site.
