It stands in the historic core of the city, in the Bab al-Na'ura area, between the Kaylaniyya quarter to the east and north and the Bustan al-Sa'ada quarter to the west, overlooking the east bank of the Orontes (Asi) river. It is counted among the notable landmarks of a city rich in historic mosques, alongside the Great Mosque and the Abu al-Fida Mosque. It takes its name from its founder, the Zengid ruler Nur al-Din Mahmud Zengi.
