Fethiye Mosque is a former church in the centre of Kars that now serves as a mosque. While it was a church, it was known as the Alexander Nevsky Church or the Cossack Church. A work of Russian religious architecture, it has a rectangular plan and is built of light and dark brown tuff stone. Notable exterior details include round-arched pediments above the windows, a trefoil-shaped feature on the roof and a group of three round-arched windows. The mosque stands on Gazi Ahmet Muhtar Paşa Caddesi.

History

The Russian Empire took Kars in 1878 and established the Kars Oblast. The building was constructed by the Russians as a church in the late 19th century, after that date.

It stood empty after 1915 and, following the Turkish-Armenian War of 1921, was used for a time by several public institutions. In 1953 the church's onion domes were removed and its bell tower was demolished. The building served as an indoor sports hall until the 1970s, and in 1984 it was converted into a mosque with the addition of two minarets.

Fethiye Camii, Kars merkezdeki Yeni Mahalle'de yer alan, kiliseden camiye çevrilmiş bir yapıdır. Kilise iken Aleksandr Nevski Kilisesi (Rusça: Церковь Александра Невского Tserkov Aleksandra Nevskogo) veya Kazak Kilisesi denirdi.
