The Juma Mosque of Ganja stands in the centre of the city on Shah Ismayil Khatai Avenue. Locally called Şah Abbas Məscidi, it takes this second name from the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas the Great, who ordered its construction. The building belongs to the Safavid architectural tradition and is made of red brick, a material typical of Ganja. For a long time it also served as a madrasa. The mosque is listed as a cultural heritage monument of Azerbaijan.

The mosque was built in 1606 on the orders of Shah Abbas, following a design attributed to Sheykh Baha al-din (also given as Baheddin Mohammad Amili). According to one source, two minarets were added in 1776.

The building served as a madrasa for a long period, and the Azerbaijani poet and scholar Mirza Shafi Vazeh taught there.

In 2008 the mosque was completely rebuilt. During the work, old Russian bonds were found in an envelope. The discovery led to the conclusion that the last construction work took place in 1910, rather than in the late 18th century under Javad Khan, as had previously been believed.
