The mosque is attributed to Sultan Tahmidullah II, who ruled the Banjar realm from 1761 to 1801. According to the available account, the sultan had ordered the execution of Datu Abulung, a scholar who had been accused of heresy, and had the mosque built as a form of reparation for that act. The building is now recognised as part of Martapura's cultural heritage.
