One source states that a mosque was first established on the site in the middle of the 17th century, and that the building standing today dates from 1710. Another source mentions only 1710, describing it as the date when the mosque is thought to have been built.

In 2010 the mosque was recognised as cultural property in Indonesia, alongside Bingkudu Mosque, Rao Rao Mosque and Ganting Grand Mosque in Padang.
