The mosque was founded in 1856. The earliest building, known as the Old Jamik Mosque, was in the typical Minangkabau style, with tapered, cone-shaped roofs.

It was heavily damaged in the 1926 Padang Panjang earthquake. A few months after the quake, a new mosque was built on the initiative of Yahya Datuk Kayo, a member of the Volksraad representing Minangkabau. Designed by Yazid Rajo Mangkuto, it differed completely in form from its predecessor. The renewed mosque was inaugurated on 5 February 1932.

The building was destroyed again by the earthquake of March 2007. It was afterwards restored in a form similar to the one it had before the quake.
