The mosque was built in 1475 or 1476 (880 AH) by Isa Bey, son of Ishak Bey, who had financed the Aladja Mosque in Skopje. According to the available material, construction began after Isa Bey's death, in accordance with his last wishes.
The 1963 earthquake caused heavy damage, and the restoration of 1966 included a renewal of the interior decoration. This work replaced the original decoration, of which only black-and-white photographs remain; they do not allow the materials and colours used to be determined.
